II. Scheme of the Morphological Analysis.
1. Give the basic form of the word, define what part of speech it belongs to.
2. State whether it is a notional or functional part of speech.
3. Characterize its grammatical meaning and state its semantic subclass:
• if it is notional – follow pattern A.
• if it is functional – follow pattern B.
Pattern A:
1) the Noun – proper, common; class, collective, material, abstract; animate, inanimate, countable, uncountable.
2) the Verb – terminative, durative, polysemantic; transitive, intransitive; notional, auxiliary, link, modal; Present, Past, Future; Continuous, Non-Continuous; Perfect, Non-Perfect; Active, Passive; Indicative, Imperative, Subjunctive.
Exercise 4. Characterize the words constituting the sentence as to the parts of speech they belong to, give morphological analysis of the words:
a) There was a breath of wind, and the lamp flame jumped (p. 44 ).
b) Presently I am going to press the lever, and off the machine will go (p. 44).
c) It is travelling through time fifty times or a hundred times faster than we are, if it gets through a minute while we get through a second, the impression it creates will of course be only one-fiftieth or one-hundredth of what it would make if it were not travelling in time (p. 45).
d) The first to recover completely from this surprise was the Medical Man, who rang the bell – the Time Traveller hated to have servants waiting at dinner – for a hot plate (p. 49).
e) Most of us hearers were in shadow, for the candles in the smoking-room had not been lighted, and only the face of the Journalist and the legs of the Silent Man from the knees downward were illuminated (p.51).
f) The dim suggestion of the laboratory seemed presently to fall away from me, and I saw the sun hopping swiftly across the sky, leaping it every minute, and every minute marking a day (p.53).
